There are four key areas of focus when it comes to ensuring the ethos behind your heart rate training offering gives the biggest benefit to your members.
A lot of the impact behind these points stem from why Myzone was created in the first place. However, the way in which you build on that is rooted in why this heart rate training technology keeps people moving in your gym or fitness facility for longer over time.
Any monitoring hardware, gym software, or gym member wearable devices should leverage technology to ensure people feel good about exercise and positive behaviour change.
Not only does this need to happen in gym classes or on the gym floor, but it should always apply during the lead up to entering any fitness space, and after a workout.
Don’t forget, this collection of people isn’t limited to your members; it’s about you and your staff, too. Embracing a technology solution and successfully onboarding staff means fitness professionals can build lasting relationships with anyone exercising – it works both ways.
In a world saturated by statistics, with gym members deluged by data at every turn, knowing what to measure has never been more important. Not only that, but knowing how to interpret that data and, ideally, having software that does that all for you will unlock an experience that far outweighs the education of numbers alone.
While Myzone does measure raw heart rate for anyone that’s looking to better understand their maximum measurements and thresholds, it’s the step away from traditional tracking that makes every beat all the more understandable.
Myzone Effort Points (MEPs) are all about rewarding effort. Unlike traditional metrics that focus on how fast or strong you are, MEPs level the playing field by tracking how hard your heart is working during any physical activity. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned athlete, the more effort you put in, the more MEPs you earn.
For gym members, MEPs offer a tangible way to see progress and stay motivated. They turn every workout into a challenge, giving you instant feedback and helping you push just a little harder each time.
It's not just about working out; it’s about seeing how your effort adds up, keeping you engaged and driven toward your goals. Plus, with friendly competition and goals to hit, MEPs create a sense of accomplishment and fun in every workout, motivating you to keep moving!
Getting a gym member’s maximum heart rate correct is key to all of this. Through data inputted by the individual upon registration with Myzone, the software uses the HUNT formula, which is Max HR = 211 – (0.64 x age), to ensure accuracy from the start.
However, if an individual is capable of pushing beyond this age-predicted number for extended periods of time, their Myzone profile will automatically adjust to reflect their actual capabilities. This is often the case as members get fitter and can outlast their original measurements as they move.
It’s easy to see in classes if someone isn’t at the correct level for their ability. Whether they’re measuring in higher heart rate zones on the board when most people are low, or if they’re in the green when everyone else is pushing for red (and they’re still working hard), gym owners and training staff can adjust their max heart rate in the admin end of the Myzone software.
Myzone uses five heart rate zones to give you real-time feedback on how hard you're working, tailored to your individual effort as a percentage of individual’s maximum heart rate. Each zone is colour-coded to make it easy to understand at a glance:
Understanding these zones brings lasting benefits by encouraging consistency and smarter training. When you know exactly how much effort you're putting in, you can balance your workouts, avoiding burnout while still pushing yourself when it counts. This clarity leads to better results and reinforces positive habits, making exercise a sustainable part of your routine.
The real magic happens when your members can see their progress – working out becomes more than just a task; it’s a journey of personal growth. By tracking effort and staying motivated through the zones, gym members are more likely to stick to their routines, building a healthier, fitter lifestyle that lasts.
