Living with fibromyalgia brings challenges far greater than just the more common barriers to fitness. But Anthony Temperton has stuck to a journey of physical activity that stacked determination over discomfort for the long term.
He explains: “The Myzone platform and fitness tracker has done something nothing else has: it has kept me motivated to stay active.”
Overcoming lost motivation to exercise more
Before discovering Myzone, Anthony Temperton had a “stop-start” relationship with fitness. Despite understanding the benefits of regular exercise, he struggled to stick with it long-term.
“I’d get motivated to work out, but eventually, I’d lose that spark and stop altogether,” says Anthony. “This cycle of motivation followed by inactivity went on for years, and I felt like I’d never break it.”
That changed when Anthony’s wife was introduced to Myzone through her work.
Determination to move, despite fibromyalgia
Wearing a Myzone device that uses heart rate to measure exertion effort, Anthony’s wife started tracking her monthly Myzone Effort Points (MEPs), a metric designed to reward effort, not just performance.
Intrigued, Anthony decided to give it a try himself. Just over six years on and he hasn’t missed a single monthly MEP target.
For Anthony, this achievement is even more significant because fibromyalgia, a chronic condition, causes pain and tenderness throughout his body, especially in his legs.
Myzone contributing to a better quality of life
“I was diagnosed in 2014, and since then, I’ve learned that even low-intensity activities, like gardening, help manage my pain,” explains Anthony. “By keeping me motivated to stay active, Myzone helps me control the discomfort, enabling a better quality of life.
“I love that I can log MEPs anywhere. When I’m in the garden, whether it’s cutting the lawn, pruning hedges or working on my vegetable patch, Myzone records every bit of effort and counts it towards my monthly target. This ‘anytime, anywhere’ functionality means I never feel restricted - I just keep moving, and it all adds up.”
Myzone’s focus on effort over performance also resonates deeply with Anthony.
“I’m never going to run a marathon or climb a mountain. But that’s not what Myzone is about. It’s about rewarding movement, whatever form that takes.
“This shift in focus has been incredibly motivating, and I’d encourage anyone struggling with consistency to give it a try.”
